Mapping a share to a drive letter

For shares that you use often, I find it's easiest to map the share folder to a drive letter. Then your share will appear in Windows Explorer as a drive, though it's not really a drive. It just makes it quicker to access that's all, the share will still appear in "My Network Places" but will also appear as a drive in "Windows Explorer". Some applications require this as they don't have access to "Network Neighborhood" or "My Network Places". To map your share to a drive letter open "Windows Explorer" and from the tools menu select "Map Network Drive...". Browse for your share or simply type the UNC name of the share i.e. \\willow\allsites. You can select the drive letter to assign to this share or just accept the choice already made. If you wish this mapping to remain permanently place a tick in "Reconnect at logon". If you only want this to be a temporary mapping then untick this box. Windows 2000 allows or denies access based on share permissions for users and/or groups.

These instructions are relevant for most Windows operating systems as they vary only slightly and settings are made in slightly different places. If your having trouble with your version of Windows use help from the start menu. The main difference being windows 95/98/me access is granted based on a password only, and the slection you make while mapping the share.
